Make Your Real Estate Website User-Friendly, Not Flashy

Jorge Medina

A real estate agent needs a good, user-friendly website in order to really get clients. While referrals from others are still number one, those referrals are going to want to check out an agency before entrusting their housing search to it.

Websites can easily go one of two ways, either to the very user-friendly side or to the overdone and beset with issues side. It's vital that you keep your intended audience in mind, but also allow for a little leeway to make sure your site can capture the broadest audience possible.

Never Assume People Will Use A Particular Broswer

If you've ever gotten a message that a site was optimized for one particular browser, and it was the browser you don't use, you know how oddly annoying that message can be. Even if the functionality isn't affected, it gives the site visitor the impression that they're not seeing all of the site. They might not click through as many listing links in that case and might not spend as much time on the site as they would've had if they had not gotten that message. And if functionality is affected, that makes it harder for visitors to navigate the site at all.

If you have a real estate site, you want people to be able to view everything on it. Restricting optimization to one browser or one type of device (e.g., desktop but not mobile) can be a frustrating experience for someone who just wants to get through the housing search with as little trouble as possible. They aren't going to close one browser and open another just because your website said to do so.

Don't Overload the Site

You might want to add several features to your website that take time to load on slower computers. At first, add only necessary features and keep any videos off autoplay; your site visitors will appreciate it. They'll love seeing a site that loads easily and quickly. If you put too much into the site in terms of features and widgets, people could click away as they wait for the site to load.

Give People Information!

If you're going to have a real estate website, make sure it actually provides information. Think about sites where you've had trouble finding a page that you thought would be a basic feature. Make sure the navigation is easy and the pages provide actionable information.

If you're skilled in web design, you might be able to handle the technical aspects yourself, but look into having the actual design made by a real estate web development firm. They can help you create a site that makes it easy for visitors to see who you are, what types of properties you usually work with, and what the purchasing or selling process is like.
